A snippet of local history :
The building,
along with its neighbours, was designed by the renowned local architect Matthew
Henry Holding (1846-1910) and is very much a part of the rich architectural
legacy of the period.
Northampton's historic Guildhall was built in 1861-1864 by the celebrated architect E. W.
Godwin and is just a few minutes walk from the studio.
In 1892 Matthew Holding was commissioned to design the west wing
extension which was done very much in keeping with the original gothic style.
Indeed E. W. Godwin also built other properties on the Billing Road
which have since attained listed status.
Matthew
Holding also designed St. Matthew’s Church (1891-1893), a Northampton visitor attraction famous not only for the beautiful architecture but also for the works
of art housed there, particularly the Madonna and Child which was Henry
Moore’s first major public commission in 1944.
The well known town house 78 Derngate, refurbished
by Charles Rennie Macintosh is also just a few minutes walk from the
studio.
